Clinical Observations on primary lung cancer (76 cases)

Abstract
A clinical obsesrvation was made on 73 cases of primary lung cencer seen at Kyungpook University Hospital between Januery 1960, and December 1968.
Patients varied in age from 28 to 71 years, with highest concentration lying in the fifth decade (45.2 percent). The mean age was 51.6 years. Sixty-three patients were men and 10 were women giving a proportion of men: wemen, 6.3:1.
Epidermoid carcinomas were the most frequent, representing 49.3 percent, with undifferentated carcinoma 26.0 percent ademocarcinoma 11.0 percent and type undetermination 13.7 percent.
The ratio between cigarette smokers and non-smokers was approximately 9:1.
The frequent symptoms were cough (82.2 percent), dyspnea (58.9 percent), chest pain (58.9 percent), in that order of frequency.
Of 31 patients subjected to brnchoscopic examination, in 22 (71 percent) Showed the presence of a tumor, in 2 showed abnormalities in the bronchus sugestive of tumor and in remainder 7 showed negative finding. Eighteen patients of the tumor visualized cases were performed bronchial biopsy and obtained 11 (61.1 percent) positiveresults. Five blind biopsies of the negative bronchoscopy group were showed also negative.
Exploratory thoracotomies were performed in 19 patients (21.8 percent). Resections were possible only in 9 (12.3 percent) patients.
